Eye Care Precautions for Summer

eye care tips for summer

Summer has arrived, and this year more than ever, we all want to spend long days at the beach, afternoons by the pool, and enjoy time with our loved ones on a terrace. Just as we need to take special care and protection of our skin during this season, we must also take precautions for our eyes in summer.

These are the basic measures to take care of our visual health and the problems they will prevent if you follow them daily.

1: Always wear certified sunglasses.

This is the first and most important precaution. If your sunglasses are not certified, no matter how wonderful their design is, do not use them. A lens that does not protect actually harms because it acts like a plastic barrier between your eyes and the sun.

For a lens to protect, it must filter 100% of UV rays. We should also consider its category.

Knowing how to choose the category of sunglasses lenses as one of the eye care precautions.

Usually, categories range from 0 to 4. The first category absorbs the least percentage of sunlight and therefore lets more rays through. For outdoor use, beach, pool… the appropriate category is 3, which absorbs up to 90% of solar rays. Important! Category 4 is not recommended for driving, as the level of darkening and absorption is so high that it should only be used for high mountain or sea sports.

2: Eye hydration should be greater and more continuous.

Exposure to air conditioning for most of the day increases dryness and dehydration of the eye. You can solve this by applying artificial tears or moisturizing drops to keep the eye always hydrated.

3: If you wear contact lenses, don’t overuse them.

Contact lens users tend to increase their wearing hours during summer. Change them as recommended and do not exceed the recommended hours (8-10 hours). The best solution is to use silicone hydrogel contact lenses that constantly hydrate the eye, preventing dryness and visual fatigue.

4: DO NOT open your eyes underwater!

Neither in the sea nor in the pool. It can be a source of infection, and the chemicals they contain, like chlorine, harm the defenses of our eyes.

Thinking about eye care precautions during summer is more important than ever. Remember that your eyes are, among many other things, skin, and like skin, they need to be cared for.
