The short answer is that it depends. The price varies depending on the type of lens and the treatments you add. But since that doesn’t tell you much, here’s the long answer.
One of the most common questions on our WhatsApp isn’t about frames or brands. It’s this: how much does it cost to replace the lenses in my glasses. Sometimes people have glasses they love but the lenses are scratched, other times their prescription has changed, and sometimes they just want to add a prescription to sunglasses they bought without one.
In all these cases, replacing the lenses makes more sense than buying new glasses. But very few people know how much it costs or how the online process works. So here are the real prices, with no fine print.
Prices by lens type
|
Lens type |
Starting price |
Who it’s for |
|
Single vision (distance or near) |
From €19 |
For people with myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. Also for presbyopia (only). |
|
Progressive (all distances) |
From €79 |
From around 40-45 years old, reading up close starts to get difficult, sometimes combined with other vision defects. That’s when we might need progressives. |
|
Sunglass lens (for sunglasses) |
From €38 |
For those who want to replace sunglass lenses with new non-prescription ones. |
|
Prescription sunglass lens |
From €44 |
For those who want to add a prescription to sunglasses. |
|
Photochromic (darkens in sunlight) |
From €68 |
For anyone who wants a lens that works both indoors (clear lens) and in the sun (sunglass lens). |
What determines the final price?
There are three things that affect the price:
-
The refractive index. This is the thickness of the lens. The higher the prescription, the better to choose a higher index (1.67 or 1.74) so the lens isn’t too thick. Higher indexes cost a bit more, but for medium to high prescriptions the visual and aesthetic result is worth it.
-
The treatments you add. Anti-reflective coating is the most common treatment, reducing reflections from screens and car lights, and it’s always included in our prices. The blue light filter is useful for those who spend many hours in front of a computer. Each treatment adds between €19 and €49 depending on the type.
-
How you send your frame. This doesn’t change the price of the lens itself, but depending on whether you send it yourself, we pick it up (+€5), or you drop it off at a specific point (+€4), the total price may vary.
Is it worth replacing the lenses or better to buy new glasses?
At Gafas de Óptica we prefer to REUSE before RENEWING. But this always depends on the frame.
If you have glasses you like, that fit well and are in good condition, replacing the lenses is always cheaper than buying a complete new pair. A new Ray-Ban frame can cost between €100-150. Meanwhile, new lenses for that same frame start from €19-49.
The situation where it makes sense to buy new glasses is when the frame is damaged or you simply want a new look. In that case, renewing everything makes sense.
If you’re unsure whether your glasses are compatible with lens replacement, send us a photo of the frame via WhatsApp and we’ll tell you right away if it’s possible and how much it would cost.
How the online process works
With us, there’s no need to go to an optical store. The entire process is done from home since our optical team always reviews your order:
1. Choose the type of lens and treatments in the configurator on our website.
2. Upload your prescription or send it to us via WhatsApp. If you don’t have a recent prescription or any at all, we can get your prescription from glasses you already have.
3. We pick up your glasses at home or you send them to our workshop and choose the shipping method during the process.
4. Our opticians fit the lenses and send them back to you at home.
The usual turnaround time is 2 to 10 days from when we receive the glasses, and we’ll keep you informed at every step.
