Spring has arrived, the weather is nice, and the daylight hours are longer. Enjoying a walk, an afternoon on the terrace, or the first days at the beach are moments we all look forward to. Now more than ever, we pay special attention to protecting and caring for our skin and also our eyes. What are the advantages of polarized sunglasses?

How do polarized sunglasses work?

The light we receive directly from the sun is not what really harms our eyes. However, rays reflected off a surface not only cause glare and discomfort but also damage our visual health.

We tend to protect our eyes when we consciously expose ourselves to the sun, for example, at the beach or in the snow. But we don’t do it in everyday situations where rays are also harming us. When we drive, we can protect our car and ourselves with quality window films. However, our eyes are receiving reflected light from asphalt, building windows…

Wearing polarized sunglasses can reduce up to 90% of ultraviolet rays.

Advantages of polarized sunglasses by category:

Category 0: These are very light lenses with an absorption capacity between 1% and 19%. They are recommended for indoors, nighttime, or very overcast days.

Category 1: Their absorption capacity is between 20% and 56%. They are recommended in places with low brightness, such as inside the city.

Category 2: They absorb up to 80% of ultraviolet rays. They are used in situations with medium sun exposure.

Category 3: They block between 81% and 90% of UV rays. They are the most recommended for sunbathing or being on a terrace.

Category 4: These are used in water or mountain sports. Their absorption can reach up to 98%, so they are not recommended for driving.

IMPORTANT: We should not confuse the darkness level of a lens with its UV protection capacity. There can be almost transparent lenses that protect from the sun more than dark ones.
